What are your top tips for getting in shape after the holidays?
My top tip after any holiday is to cleanse the body with a good liver detox. After consuming high calories with little activity, which most of us do over the holidays, I always start the new year with a 14 day cleanse consisting of alkalising foods such as dark green vegetables and citric fruits like lemons and limes. This will rid the body of toxins and set the body up perfectly to shift any unwanted body fat that you put on over the festive period. I also increase my fluid intake massively to aid in this process.
What is a realistic fitness goal for those just starting to exercise?
When someone is setting any fitness goal, I always get them to look after their health first. Whatever your goal is, you will struggle to achieve it if your body’s fundamental health is compromised. Whether your goals are dropping body fat, building muscle or increasing aerobic fitness, the foundation you must lay down is a healthy body. Without this, you’ve failed before you have even started.
How important is it for you to have a nice smile in your profession?
I feel a nice smile is very important in my line of work. I pride myself on being very approachable and breaking that ‘personal trainer stereotype.’ A nice, white smile is always a good ice breaker!
What do you like most about your job?
The most enjoyable part of my job is meeting so many interesting people every day. I have the privilege of meeting a wide range of people, many of whom I now consider to be close friends. I love having an active job, which is great in the summertime as I spend a lot of my days in the sunshine. Seeing people achieve their goals and often changing their lives is always very satisfying.
What’s a healthy meal plan for a day?
I would always recommend starting with a protein/fat breakfast, for example, steak and nuts or eggs and salmon. Protein and fat wakes your body up and switches your brain on. All of my clients describe it as rocket fuel! I would also consume lots of fresh fruits and vegetables combined with lean proteins to keep me energised all day long. The biggest mistake people can make is to skip meals and under nourish their bodies – that’s a recipe for disaster! This is the reason why I founded The Health Kitchen (THK). We make healthy, guilt free snacks with your health in mind. All of our products are natural and free from refined sugars, wheat and gluten.
A good meal plan for a day would be:
Breakfast: eggs and smoked salmon
Lunch: chicken salad
Dinner: turkey steak and green vegetables.
In between meals: THK healthy protein cookies
Water: at least two litres per day
