How long do veneers last?
May 22, 2023
Thin mouldings designed to improve the aesthetic appearance of stained, misshapen, crooked, or chipped teeth, dental veneers have become popular with patients across the globe looking to improve their smiles.
Quick to apply and less expensive and invasive than crowns, bridges, and dental implants – but how long will dental veneers last once fitted?
Read on to find out everything you need to know about the lifecycle of dental veneers.
How long will dental veneers last?
As experienced dentists fitting dental veneers in London, we often get asked how long they will last.
On average, porcelain veneers can last for at least 10-15 years, which can be increased to 20 years or beyond if looked after properly.
Improper care, including not following aftercare instructions following your procedure, can reduce their lifespan and result in the veneers failing and needing to be replaced.
Types of dental veneers available in London
Depending on the type of dental veneer you opt for, the lifecycle of each product could differ.
Popular veneer options available at LCCD include:
-
Porcelain laminate veneers
One of the most long-lasting options available, with an expected lifespan of 10- 20 years, porcelain laminate veneers require minimal tooth preparation, can be stronger and more durable than other veneer options, and have less colour discolouration over time.
-
Lumineers™
An ultra-thin version of standard porcelain veneers, Lumineers™ are crafted from Cerinate porcelain and are not expected to last as long as standard porcelain veneers. Quicker to install, they are considered semi-permanent but don’t hide severely discoloured teeth as effectively and can look less natural.
-
Zirconia Zeneers™
Crafted from zirconia oxide, a ceramic material well known for hardness and durability, zirconia Zeneers™ can last anywhere from 10-20 years, or more, with proper care. This is because zirconia is around 10 times stronger than tooth enamel, making it an ideal material for dental veneers.
Because of this superior strength, they can be more expensive and take longer to fit but offer increased stain resistance and a more natural appearance.
How to care for your dental veneers?
Location doesn’t matter, quality does. So, whether it’s dental veneers in London or elsewhere in the country, with an experienced dentist and the right care and maintenance, their expected lifespan should be the same.
Common tips to help care for your dental veneers include:
- Brush twice daily for 2 minutes using fluoride toothpaste.
- Floss at least once per day.
- Use a fluoride mouth rinse once per day, just not straight after brushing and flossing.
- Visit your dentist regularly, be it once or twice a year.
- Limit sugar attacks from sugary or carbohydrate-rich foods.
- Avoid overly hard foods such as ice, popcorn kernels, and hard sweets which could chip your veneers.
- Never use your teeth as tools, from cutting tape to taking off bottle caps – it’s all a bad idea.
