Veneers for acid erosion

September 25, 2025

Are you finding cold winds or hot drinks painful?

Or perhaps your once-white smile is rapidly fading away and you’ve been left with yellowing teeth.

If so, it’s likely you’re experiencing acid erosion.

To find out how to rectify and perfect acid (enamel) erosion, speak to the London Centre for Cosmetic Dentistry today – the solution is much less invasive than you might worry!

Why are my teeth changing?

The most common answer in cases like yours is acid erosion.

While yellowing of the teeth can be seen as we age, it is far more noticeable and impactful if you have acid erosion, and if untreated, it can lead to long-term damage.

As the whiter enamel is worn away by frequent and long-term acid exposure, the naturally yellow-coloured dentin beneath is revealed.

Causes of acid erosion

There are two main sources of erosion: external routes from acidic foods and drinks, and internal sources from health complications.

Dietary acids:

  • Fruit juices and soft drinks, including fizzy drinks – this includes sugar-free options
  • Sports and energy drinks
  • Citrus fruits
  • Vinegars, including balsamic dressings
  • Foods high in citric or phosphoric acid or sodium citrate – such as some dairy products, jams, and packaged meats
  • Alcohol
  • Very sugary or starchy foods – as digested sugar and starch are turned into acid
  • Chewable vitamin supplements

External acid sources:

  • Vomiting – something that can be caused by pregnancy or conditions like bulimia nervosa
  • Gastric (acid) reflux – which can be caused by conditions like gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), hernias, or gastroparesis.
  • ‘Dry mouth’ or reduced saliva production

If you are concerned about enamel erosion, you should book an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible. The sooner you know about the condition, the faster it can be rectified.

How is acid erosion treated?

After an examination, our dentist can diagnose acid erosion and discuss the cause with you, in case it is something that you can change, such as indulging in too many energy drinks while at work.

Then, treatment for acid erosion can begin. In cases when the enamel is not yet worn away, our dentists can apply fluoride varnishes or remineralising treatment to strengthen the enamel you have left.

If your enamel is already lost, dentists can offer a variety of treatments designed to improve the colour of the tooth and go some way to restoring the strength of the affected teeth. This can include:

  • Veneers
  • Fillings
  • Crowns
  • Root canals and extraction

Veneers for acid erosion

If the structure of the tooth is unaffected but the teeth are discoloured, wafer-thin porcelain veneers can be securely adhered to the visible front of each affected tooth to bring back the preferred white colour.

This is by far the most popular treatment; veneers for acid erosion are common and widespread, but they’re only suitable for patients without damage to the tooth’s structure.

Fillings for acid erosion

If the structure of the tooth has been damaged and small holes or chips have appeared, fillings can be used to fill them in, strengthen the whole tooth, and also improve its appearance.

Crowns for acid erosion

For more advanced or extensive damage, crowns can be used to cover and protect the tooth in its entirety. This also brings the added benefit of restoring lost whiteness.

If the damage is irreversible, root canals and extractions may be the last steps – but this is only considered if all other treatment options have failed.
