Composite Veneers after 5 years - LCCD

Can you get veneers for diastema?

March 31, 2025

If you have gapped teeth, either as a result of genetics or extractions, you may be wondering if you can close the gaps and make your smile more even.

Luckily, dental veneers are the perfect solution for diastema – or gapped teeth.

So, what can you expect from veneer treatment if you decide you want to alter your smile?

How veneer treatment could help you

Veneers London-wide are used to cover a series of cosmetic imperfections, one of which is uneven or overly large gaps between teeth.

However, they can also correct the appearance of teeth that are:

  • Cracked or chipped
  • Worn
  • Discoloured or badly stained – and can’t be corrected with whitening treatments
  • Crooked or misaligned
  • Overly large or too narrow

Generally applied in around 3 appointments, veneers are the ideal solution for patients who have healthy teeth that are structurally sound – but could look more aesthetic.

If your teeth aren’t healthy and you have diastema, you may need to consider alternatives, like dental crowns or even dental implants.

Veneers for diastema

If treating diastema, veneers can be used to minimise large gaps and create a more even appearance in just a few appointments.

Veneer appointment one

The first step in this process includes assessing the current position of the teeth and deciding on the preferred position of the veneer shell, which will make gaps smaller.

During this planning process, they will consider the preferred size of the gap and the symmetry of your smile:

The preferred distance between teeth

If most of your teeth are 1mm apart but the two front teeth have a much larger distance of 2 or 3mm, then your dentist will plan the position of the veneers so that the gap between them is shortened to around 1mm as well.

This ensures cohesion across the smile.

Symmetry

Dentists will also need to make sure that the symmetry of the smile is not altered too much in an effort to fill the gap – as this would lead to a different smile issue after treatment.

To ensure this, the smile is always considered as a whole, so the solution blends in once completed and looks natural.

Your dentist may be able to use AI or imaging software to show you what your new smile might look like and explain exactly what they will do.

Later veneer appointments

During your next appointment or two, your dentist will then prepare your teeth to help the veneers stick and once they are crafted, adhere them to the teeth on either side of the gap/s.

The exact timeline will differ depending on the type of veneers you opt for, but once fitted, you should see an immediate change in the appearance of your diastema, as the gap will be closed over.

Plus, as a minimally invasive procedure, there is little to no downtime associated with veneers so you can enjoy your new smile straight away.

The ideal gap size between teeth is generally considered to be between 0.5-1mm – but as long as it is no larger, it’s not generally considered an issue for bite alignment or chewing function.

However, if you have a larger gap or find the gaps you have impact your confidence, diastema solutions can be relatively simple and easy to solve.
